Places to visit

Finding a place to visit that amuses both adults and toddlers alike is not easy. Luckily Brighton/Sussex is a brilliant place with lots of great toddler friendly places to visit ( and some not so great!) Here are some tried and tested with personal ratings and my take on what I thought.  What you are about to read are purely my own views and opinions..

Blackberry Farm
Bluebell Railway
Knockhatch
Middle Farm
National Trust – Nymans
National Trust – Sheffield Park
National Trust – Wakehurst Place
National Trust – Petworth House
Paradise Park
Spring Barn Farm
Tilgate Park

Places I’ll be posting up reviews of soon:

Bluebell Railway

Facilities – no toilets on the train but has facilities at each station stop
Staff – friendly
Food – There are refreshments at all the stops. There is also a buffet train, cant comment on this as we didnt go on that.
Value for money – reasonably expensive, would advise to go before your toddler is 3 as you have to pay after that, but as a treat, well worth the pennies.
Toddler friendly – yep, people were nice and accommodating for little ones
Overall outcome – Thumbs Up! we enjoyed it

Knockhatch Adventure  Park

Facilities – toilets available throughout, child friendly
Staff – friendly
Food – Do a kids lunch bag now with a choice of sandwiches, also usual other foods like Jackets etc.
Value for money – great ( even better if you download money off vouchers – check our Freebies Section) Under 2′s free
Toddler friendly – yep
Overall outcome – Thumbs Up! we love this place, loads to do, all day fun, events going on throughout the day

Blackberry Farm

A22, Whitesmith, near Lewes, BN8 6JD, tel 01825 872912
www.blackberry-farm.co.uk

Facilities – toilets available throughout, child friendly
Staff – ok
Food – Bad
Value for money – meh -  everything looking old and tired
Toddler friendly – yep
Overall outcome – Thumbs Down! Looked like this place had its hayday and now been neglected ( doesnt look like the photos on the website anymore). Not that many animals and the Soft play area had junk behind it that was visible, and a thick layer of dust on most of it, was also quite dark. Everything all a bit grubby, animals didnt look cleaned out much.

Tilgate Park

Facilities – toilets available throughout, child friendly
Staff – friendly
Food – Massive American style pub, lovely food, big portions, not cheap though.  Also there’s a cafe and snack bars
Value for money – Good as its FREE entry. Only cost is car park £3 but if you park round the back its free ;-) Bring your own picnic to make it cheaper food wise.
Toddler friendly – yep
Overall outcome – Thumbs Up! we like this place, loads to do, brilliant playground, place kept giving, maze, nature reserve, big lakes, picnic tables, animals and long walks

Spring Barn Farm Park

Kingston Road, Lewes, East Sussex, BN7 3ND. Tel 01273 488450
www.springbarnfarm.com

Facilities – Toilets next to the restaurant and at the other end of the park
Staff – friendly
Food – Good variety, clean, good chef, childrens food box available
Value for money – bit more pricy but worth it. Under 2′s free
Toddler friendly – yep
Overall outcome – Thumbs Up! we like this place, activities throughout the day and themed on special days, animals, petting the animals, bouncy trampolines for small and big children!  Spring Barn has recently had an injection of new additions to make it even better, ‘Cockys’ indoor soft play area, tube, drop slides and mat slides, together with an allocated restaurant area with lovely food!

National Trust – Nymans

Facilities – available in the car park, by the cafe, baby changing room and then half way round there’s loos
Staff – Always friendly
Food – Always a good selection and they do pick and mix bags for todllers for £3 which is great. Theres also a drinks van half way round.
Value for money – If you’ve got kids, becoming a member of the national trust is a must! As they are expensive without it
Toddler friendly – yep
Overall outcome – Thumbs Up! We like Nymans, you have the walks around the grounds or you can do the woodland walks

National Trust – Sheffield Park

Facilities – At entrance, baby changing room, also toilets next to cafe
Staff – friendly
Food – It has an independant cafe not run by the NT which is a shame, and its pretty bad. Take a picnic or visit a local pub nearby. Has a drinks van half way round.
Value for money – If you’ve got kids, becoming a member of the national trust is a must! As they are expensive without it
Toddler friendly – yep
Overall outcome – Thumbs Up! We like Sheffield Park. It has an activities tent half way round with drawing, skipping ropes, juggling bags, egg & spoons which is a nice idea for little ones.

National Trust – Wakehurst Place

Facilities – At entrance, baby changing room and next to cafe
Staff – friendly
Food – The food ‘was’ yummy there always but when it got taken over it went down hill, I had mouldy cheese and our food was always cold!, so we stopped going.
Value for money – If you’ve got kids, becoming a member of the national trust is a must! As they are expensive without it
Toddler friendly – yep
Overall outcome – Thumbs Up AND Thumbs down! We used to like Wakehurst Place, lots of big walks to do, plenty to see. But scooters, frisbies, footballs etc not allowed! you will get a telling off  like we did! Also with the introduction of the parking costs it makes it expensive, what is the point on having a national trust card and STILL having to pay to get in somewhere?

National Trust – Petworth House

Facilities – At entrance, next to the restaurant is a baby changing room and additional toilets

Staff – friendly
Food – good, kids food boxes available
Value for money – If you’ve got kids, becoming a member of the national trust is a must! As they are expensive without it
Toddler friendly – yep
Overall outcome – Thumbs Up! Staff very friendly towards toddlers. Had activity boxes in all major rooms related to the room but suitable for kids to play with, great idea as this bought us some time to look around while the box kept lo amused! Also had cuddly dogs hidden around the house for kids to find.

Paradise Park

Facilities – half way round
Staff – ok
Food – Ok, average really.  They do a selection of food bags for kids though which was good.
Value for money – Ok, airing on expensive (use money off vouchers) but well worth the money.
Toddler friendly – yep
Overall outcome – Thumbs Up! Bit of a surprise really, place looked a bit confused, was it a garden centre, was it an adventure park. Ignore the outside as this place has a lot to offer, the dinosaur section was great and lots for kids to do. Mini train was fun. Soft play area.  This place good to go if its raining as a lot of it was under cover.

Middle Farm

Firle, Lewes, East Sussex BN8 6LJ (on the main A27 Lewes-Eastbourne road) Tel: 01323 811411
www.middlefarm.com

Facilities – near the entrance
Staff – ok
Food – Good
Value for money – Ok, its farely cheap but then again its not very big. Free to look round the farm shop. Under 3′s free
Toddler friendly – yep
Overall outcome – Thumbs in the middle! The farm animals bit is small, dont expect to be there for very long as not many animals, its ok. Best thing is the farm shop and the cider house!, now thats what you come to middle farm for! that gets a thumbs up.
